Crossfire Premier Is Finalist at 2006 Surf Cup
Jul 31, 2006
San Diego, CA - Crossfire Premier '91 finished the 2006 San Diego Surf Cup near the top - earning the finalist spot of the GU15 Division. "Where the best of the best meet," Crossfire battled San Ramon Shock to a 0-0 tie to start things off in their first A Bracket game on Saturday morning. Later that day Crossfire played World Champs Real So Cal to a 1-1 tie in an exciting finish. On Sunday morning, Crossfire got their offense rolling in a solid 5-0 win over a very good Yankee United Glory team from the east coast. That win earned Crossfire a 2nd place finish in A Bracket and an opportunity to advance into the elimination quarter-final round.
In their QF matchup Crossfire played the 2005 Surf Cup champs Slammers FC. Crossfire got on the board first, scoring from the left in the middle of the opening period, and held that lead until midway in the second, where Slammers connected on a combination play. The game ended in a tie and proceeded immediately to KFMs. Crossfire kicked first, and proceeded to bury all five of their shots into the back corners of the net, while holding Slammers to three - and took the game with a 2-1 win.
On Monday morning, Crossfire played the host team San Diego Surf White and came out strong, scoring early from the left, to take a 1-0 lead into half. Crossfire continued to put offensive pressure on and connected again in the second half to go up 2-0. Surf finished with a PK off a hand ball in the box in the last two minutes of the contest but Crossfire held on to earn their first trip to the renowned Surf Cup finals.
In a rematch of the two teams from the A Bracket, Crossfire met World Champs Real So Cal. Real So Cal earned their finals appearance by soundly beating ELA Elite 4-1 in the QF and CASA BOCA 2-1 in the SF. In the championship game, Real So Cal showed why they are the World's top GU15 team, scoring once in each half - each time off a corner kick - to earn their championship trophy. Congratulations, Real So Cal - for winning the Surf Cup, and for winning the Gothia Cup in Sweden earlier this summer! Thank you San Diego Surf for hosting such a wonderful and challenging tournament.
