Crossfire Wins Region IV Championship

200406s
Spokane, WA – In a rematch from a preliminary round game, this time for the Region IV championship, Crossfire Premier ’91 McCormick beat top-rated Southern Cal Blues 1-0 today. It was a classic championship match-up, between two teams with very similar styles of play. The Blues came out strong in the opening half, putting pressure on Crossfire’s defense for much of the half. But the Crossfire backfield stepped up time after time and smothered the ball before any serious scoring attempt could be made. However, as the first half wound down, and as the skies darkened, the momentum started to shift in Crossfire’s favor.

Crossfire came out on fire in the second half, putting immediate pressure on the Blues defense, earning a corner kick within the first two minutes. The young Crossfire squad took full advantage of the scoring opportunity. They placed a perfect arcing ball to a Crossfire player in the middle of the box, who promptly dropped a perfect roller to the top of the box, where the waiting striker fired it into the far right corner of the net for the only goal of the contest. Furthermore, the goal served to ignite the Crossfire squad, who put relentless pressure on the Blues back line for most of the second half.

With the victory, Crossfire ’91 becomes the first GU-12 team from Washington State to earn a Region IV championship, as this is the first year that Washington has approved U12s attending the championship series. In their six Region IV games, Crossfire earned a 4-0-2 record with a 13-3 goals margin. As further testament to their outstanding team play, seven different Crossfire players scored during the tournament.

Congratulations Southern Cal Blues, for the outstanding game and for your great tournament run. You are truly an incredible team, with great athletes who love the game of soccer. The quality of the competition this week left no doubt that Region IV is indeed the toughest region in the country.
